Fall-detection wearables

Fall-detection wearables: detection is not prevention.

Smartwatches and pendants now advertise fall detection, and it’s a real advance — a watch that notices a hard fall and calls for help can shorten the time someone spends on the floor. But the name hides an important distinction: these devices detect a fall that has already happened. They don’t prevent one.

How they work: sensors watch for the sudden motion signature of a fall, then prompt the wearer and, if there’s no response, alert a contact or a call center. That’s valuable for someone who lives alone. It’s the same category of help as a medical alert button, worn more conveniently.

The limits are worth knowing. Detection isn’t perfect — real falls can be missed, and everyday motions can trigger false alarms, which lead people to disable the feature or stop wearing the device. It has to be charged, worn, and within range. And most importantly, by the time it does its job, the fall — and any injury — has already occurred.

Prevention is a different problem entirely. It lives in the minutes before the fall: the walker within reach, the lit path, the pause before standing. No wrist sensor changes those. The most effective nighttime interventions in the research are boringly physical — the walker at the bedside before sleep, a light that comes on without a decision, a moment to steady before walking.

The honest framing: wear the watch if it helps — it’s a good backstop. Just don’t mistake a backstop for a fix. Detection reduces the harm of a fall; reducing the risk is separate work that happens before the fall — the lit path, the clear floor, the walker used, the steady stand. Goose is built to do that risk-reduction work, and to detect a fall if one still happens.
